Under the egis of the Inter-African Association for the Prevention of Occupational Risks (IAPRP), the second edition of the African Congress on Health and Safety in Mines and Quarries was held from September 4 to 8, 2023, in Conakry. The theme of this session was: "What strategies for promoting health and safety in mines and quarries in the IAPRP region: challenges and prospects?"
The Conakry meeting was attended by over 230 participants from the public and private sectors, NGOs and international institutions, mainly from member countries of the Inter-African Association for the Prevention of Occupational Risks (IAPRP), notably Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea Bissau, Mali (IAPRP headquarters), the Republic of Guinea, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal. The opening ceremony was launched by the Guinean Minister of Labor and Civil Service, Julien Yombouno.
The central objective of this congress is "to promote a strategic approach to the overall control of risks in mines and quarries", according to the organizers. This is an important objective for employees in this sector, as over 330,000 employees die every year as a result of work-related accidents in the mining sector, according to statistics from the International Labor Organization (ILO).
The closing ceremony of the second edition of the African Congress on Safety and Health in Mines and Quarries was presided over by the Guinean Prime Minister, Dr. Bernard Goumou, who pledged "to do everything possible to implement the strong recommendations resulting from this work. He dwelt on the issues of child labor and the use of hazardous chemicals in mines and quarries, which are not only harmful to workers' health, but also to the environment".
