Colombia – The city of Cali is set to host the COP on biological diversity

Two years after COP15, the city of Cali, Colombia's third most populous city, will host the sixteenth United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity from October 21 to November 1, 2024. It will bring together representatives of governments, indigenous communities, businesses, academics, civil society activists, etc. from the signatory states of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity adopted in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Initially planned to be hosted by Turkey, this sixteenth COP will be hosted by Colombia following the withdrawal of Turkey, which was hit by earthquakes in February 2023. Meeting in Cali, capital of the department of Valle del Cauca, the participants in COP 16 are expected to:

  • examine the commitments of the different countries (for the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted in December 2022 in Montreal, Canada)
  • Discuss the financial mechanism
  • Establishing the modalities of a multilateral mechanism for sharing benefits from biodiversity

Could the COP in Cali help "reduce threats to biodiversity, meet people's needs through sustainable use and equitable benefit-sharing, and put in place tools and solutions for implementation and integration", in line with the objectives of the Global Biodiversity Framework adopted in 2022?
